What is the practicality of flexible solar panel?

Flexible solar panel is an emerging technology product in the world's solar industry. It is a solar panel made of resin-encapsulated amorphous silicon as the main photovoltaic element layer tiled on a base plate made of flexible material. It can be bent and portable, but the conversion efficiency is slightly lower than ordinary rigid solar panels.

Characteristics of flexible solar panel

It is made of resin-encapsulated amorphous silicon as the main optoelectronic element layer tiled on a base plate made of flexible material. This new type of solar cell can be bent into any curved surface or any irregular shape.

It can be placed on the top of streamlined cars, on the cabin surfaces of sailboats, racing boats, motorboats, and on the roofs and exterior walls of buildings such as houses to fully utilize the abundant solar energy and convert it into electric current. This current can be stored in a battery to generate power or as an energy source.

Flexible flexible solar panel mainly has the following application areas.

1. Daily household use. Flexible solar panel can be installed on the balcony to create a small balcony photovoltaic system to provide basic electricity for small household loads.

2. Installed on the top of the vehicle. Because flexible solar panels have a certain bending ability and are relatively lightweight, they can be mounted on the top or sunny side of cars, boats, etc., and used as charging components.

3. For construction purposes. Some building surfaces are uneven and may be curved or have a certain curvature. In this case, in order to better fit the building surface, flexible solar panels are generally used.

4. For distributed power generation. In this case, the main purpose is to take advantage of its lightweight. As for flexibility, it is of little significance. Generally, lightweight components weigh 4-5kg per square meter, which is 50-70% less than normal components weighing 11-14kg per square meter. Some roofs have a relatively small load-bearing capacity, and lightweight components can be used here. Lightweight components are generally glued to roofs and building surfaces. They do not require brackets and ribs, and can be installed in a wider range.

Flexible solar panel has advantages over conventional solar panels:

1. Structural advantages:

Conventional solar cells generally have a structure of EVA material and cells between two layers of glass. Such components are heavier and require brackets during installation, making them difficult to move. This flexible thin film solar panels do not require glass back sheets and covers, and are 80% lighter than double-glass solar cell modules. Flexible cells using PVC back sheets and ETFE film covers can even be bent at will, making them easy to carry.

2. Wide application:

It can be applied to solar backpacks, solar convertibles, solar flashlights, solar cars, solar sailing boats and even solar aircraft. The scope of use is relatively wide. The disadvantage is that the photoelectric conversion efficiency is lower than that of conventional crystalline silicon components.

3. Weight advantage

Flexible photovoltaic panels relieve the constraints of conventional photovoltaic panels on weight, thickness, portability and bending resistance, and have a wider range of applications. Compared with conventional photovoltaic panels, it is lighter in weight. If customers want to install a more powerful photovoltaic system on the roof, flexible panels are more suitable.

To obtain high-performance flexible dye-sensitized solar cells and promote their industrialization, breakthroughs must be sought from the following aspects. On the one hand, it is necessary to further improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency and stability of flexible solar panels. Another aspect is to further reduce the cost of batteries and enable roll-to-roll large-scale printing preparation.
