As a kind of clean energy, wind energy has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, and its technical applications have gradually matured. On this basis, wind turbines, as a tool for using wind energy, have gradually been widely used. Currently, there are two main types of wind turbines: horizontal wind turbines and vertical wind turbine.
Currently, both small wind turbines have different audiences and markets, but high-power power generation systems are basically horizontal axis, which is mainly related to the manufacturing level.
Horizontal wind power generation has a simple structure and relatively high efficiency, and has been produced on a large scale. However, horizontal-axis wind power generation requires wind control devices, and the generator must be placed on the top of the tower, which makes maintenance costs relatively high.
After comparing the two, we can find that the vertical wind turbine has many advantages such as small wind direction influence, high wind energy utilization coefficient, low starting wind speed, high reliability, large safe wind speed operating range, low noise pollution, and beautiful appearance. Here we will mainly tell you about the advantages and disadvantages of vertical wind turbine.
Vertical wind turbines have the following advantages:
1. The generator and gearbox of the vertical axis can be installed under the tower. The overall center of gravity is low, making it easier to adapt to complex environments and large-scale, and easy to maintain and repair.
2. Vertical wind turbines do not need to face the wind when the wind direction changes, and do not need tailplanes and yaw systems to drive the blades. This is a major advantage compared to horizontal wind turbines. It not only simplifies the structural design, but also reduces the gyroscopic force of the wind rotor against the wind.
3. The vertical axis blade rotates into a simple cylindrical shape, which can theoretically receive wind energy from all directions. Without the need for wind control devices, the power generation should be higher.
4. The noise is low. Generally, it can generate electricity in only a dozen revolutions. 200 revolutions is already the rated speed. It can generate electricity in the range of wind speed of 1-28 meters/second. The low speed will not affect the ecology and does not require lubricating oil.
5. The turning radius is small, which can save more space and accommodate more equipment.
6. The wind resistance is very small, and it can work under typhoons of 50 meters/second.
7. The generator output curve is relatively hard. In the wind speed range of 5-9 meters/second, the output power is about 20% higher than the horizontal axis.
8. The control is also simple, and there is no need for a yaw system to drive the blades.
9. The tower design of the vertical axis wind turbine is simple and the braking system is also simple.
Vertical wind turbines have the following disadvantages:
1. Because its blades run in a circle and do not generate torque, the overall efficiency is not as good as horizontal axis wind power generation.
2. If the speed exceeds a certain range, it will be difficult to control, and it will not be easy to start.
3. The vertical type can better utilize wind energy in all directions, eliminating the yaw of the current wind turbine to the wind and the tangential elevation angle of the wind itself, greatly improving the utilization efficiency of wind energy. But at the same time, due to its own structural problems, it cannot be developed into a large generator. These factors need to be improved in the future technological development process.
